November 2013 [IGN]
It was a very difficult film to shoot because it was not supposed to be… for me or for my collaborator… a science fiction film. It was a film about the present. It was about the state of things. It was about everything that you see in the background. Our images are taken from photojournalism or newsreels. We did extensive research to understand what are the themes and phenomenons that are shaping our world today: the excessive presence of police, surveillance, and so on… It was winter in London. It was bleak, but, at the same time, that bleakness has an amazing beauty. Everyone hated having to have to start working at four thirty in the morning but, Emmanuel Lubezki and I, we just loved that winter early light. It’s just unlike anything on Earth, and we loved that.
